This, is my second weeks teaching for part-time intensive English and although it’s still new but I am so happy to see some improvement from my students. Starting from a person who can’t even speak a little but now can speak English.. perhaps 30%.. that’s better than none. But, that doesn’t mean that I am satisfied with their improvement as I’m hoping more from giving and receiving the knowledge.
Since, some of my students can’t pronounce the words correctly; I had done some of my own research by teaching them the basic phonetic. I guess, using phonetic for the students who consider as a low elementary level and can’t even pronounce the word very well is actually effective. Even I am teaching those from my own age and even more older than me, but I guess my job as an educator is more challenging as I am facing variety cognitive level of my students. One of my student, really impress me with the use of her English but her problems is only with her spelling. For example:
“ I am Darysa. My father name’s, my mather name’s Dary.i’m a number thou from tree of my sister. My oldest sister name Wati. My younges sister name’s Darniati. My father job simen saling and famer. My mum’s a housewife. My oldest siste olredy married. She have one son and a job same like my mum’s it housewife. She’s hasband job is macanik. Yanges siste a job at lembaga elektrik and me work a sales girl. I’m live in
Olthough we a sisters but our attitiud is very different. Oldest sister more to surrender. Yaunges sister very stubborn and me very naughty, tease and mouth talkative. So, is have discusseand, my father more like discusse with one persend because he not’s thuid like that, the discusseand be come change to a fight. Specialy me and yaunges neave understanding eachother. Oldest sister I neve had problem with hem.
You no samething, wen I’m far from eachother, I’m file mis him. Special my yanges sister.”
I am not so sure whether this might be effective. But what I do, I ask her to write the correct spelling one more time… but I guess, it’s getting improve…some of the words, she can spell it correctly…but still need a lot of improvement. Since I had teach them the use of grammar for possessive ‘s, she really applies it correctly even a little grammatical error here and there.
Different from one of my student who can’t even pronounce the words correctly, I used phonetic to teach her. For example,
wife - / waif/
Sister - / ‘sis tə/
Married - / ‘ mærid /
This is fun learning for students who can’t pronounce the words correctly. Phonetic is the answer. But, some of my friend said that perhaps I can teach them by using jolly phonic…but, what the hell is that?? Ahhaha.. I’ll try to research on that later on. I can’t imagine, now I’m applying all this things. I do learn all this in uni but now I know…learning is not just sit and learn, it’s something that you need to apply towards learning…! Damn!!hahha.!!
But, here’s another different situation… one of my student write or talk with be my malay translation to English learning. For example:
“ My name is Rockefeller Jensen Guan Bee my family from means my fathers name Guan Bee Kim Kuan and my mothers name is Illy Fung and my sister Kelly, Wendy, Shally and I, Rockefeller. My sister first married on 2003 year and sharing product some live husband has a three child two son and one daughter.
Second sister and third sister and I still single. My sister nember two and three wihn enter muslim so my fathers don’t enter at the Muslim because from grandfather and grandmother no enter at muslim so whan enter muslim speaks my fathers silence my sister nember two and three enter at muslim.
Anew what my father angry some my sister’s because no love my sister enter muslim so my speak order one don’t religion convert anew. Order that make final my sister and i.”
OMG!!! THIS ONE….I DON’T KNOW HOW TO use a suitable method??any ideas??? hhehhehehe
p/s : mcm buat assignment pula suda ni tau…wakkakka..lol!!!
